Speakaboo is a free iPhone app that tells you what your camera is pointing at. You tap once, it describes what it sees in about two seconds, and you can ask follow-up questions in plain language. It's made for blind and low-vision people who just want a quick answer without any fuss.

Mostly speed. Speakaboo gives you an AI answer in about two seconds from a single tap, with no menu to dig through and no waiting for a volunteer to pick up. Be My Eyes is great when you actually want a real person on the line; Speakaboo is for the quick, everyday "what is this?" moments. Plenty of people keep both.

Seeing AI makes you pick a mode first. Speakaboo skips all that: you tap once, get an answer, and just ask whatever else you're wondering in your own words. The whole point is to be fast and stay out of your way.

It can be, depending on what you're after. Speakaboo is free, runs on the iPhone you already have, and is built to be fast: one tap and an answer in a couple of seconds. Aira puts you through to paid human agents, and Envision leans more toward reading documents and its smart glasses. If you mainly want instant answers without waiting or paying by the minute, Speakaboo is a good fit.

Yes, and it's the fastest way to use it. On any iPhone with an Action Button (15 Pro and newer), you can set it so one press opens the camera and starts listening. You can also add it to your Lock Screen or a Home Screen widget, or just ask Siri.

It does. Everything works offline too: when there's no connection, Speakaboo switches to AI running right on your phone. Answers are a little less accurate that way, but you're never stuck without it.

Completely. It was built with VoiceOver users from the start, so everything is properly labelled and the whole camera flow works by touch. That was really the whole reason we made it.

Yes. The camera and mic only switch on while you're holding the button to ask. Photos go to AI services just long enough to describe them, and we don't use your photos to train any models. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Definitely, a lot of people do exactly that. The idea is you set it up once and it just works: install it, put it on the Action Button or Lock Screen, show them the "hold and ask" bit once, and they're good to go on their own.

The easiest way is to grab one of the ready-made shortcuts at speakaboo.app/shortcuts. They're already set up, so you just add them to your Action Button or Lock Screen. If you'd rather build your own, you can do that in the Shortcuts app using Speakaboo's actions.

Pretty well, though a loud street or a busy station can throw it off. If you're somewhere noisy, holding the phone a bit closer or using headphones with a mic makes a big difference.
